Dr. David McSurdy built Dr. McSurdy, Dr. Boyle & Team around a clear mission: patients should feel cared for in every interaction. After serving the community for 40 years, he’s passed his patient-first standards and innovative approach and knowledge to Dr. Vincent Boyle.
From braces to clear aligner treatment and early orthodontic care, Dr. McSurdy has been known for thoughtful diagnoses, clear communication, and a focus on long-term oral health. Now, he oversees Dr. McSurdy & Staff with the same careful attention that he gave to patients for four decades.
Professional Background
Dr. McSurdy earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Lafayette College before completing dental school at Temple University School of Dentistry. He then pursued specialized orthodontic training at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Throughout his career, he maintained active memberships in the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and the American Dental Association (ADA). Patients and families across Collegeville and Gilbertsville have long known him as “The Smile Specialist,” with a reputation for building treatment plans that are both thorough and practical.
Treatment Philosophy
Dr. McSurdy knew that great orthodontics starts with listening. He believed every treatment plan should match the patient’s goals, lifestyle, and long-term health, instead of using a one-size-fits-all template.

Innovations in Orthodontics
Dr. McSurdy is credited with inventing the Press-on Incremental Expander (PIE) (US Patent No. 7,192,273 B2), an appliance designed to make palatal expansion more comfortable than traditional turn-key expanders. The patent is now owned by the same company that makes Invisalign aligners, and the press-on expanders are currently in-use worldwide.
This innovation reflects the way he approached orthodontics throughout his career; he looked closely at what patients actually experienced during treatment, then improved the tools and processes to make care more comfortable without compromising results.
