What Are Orthodontic Retainers for Teeth?

Retainers are custom-made appliances that hold teeth in their corrected positions after orthodontic treatment. Once braces or aligners finish moving teeth, the surrounding bone and tissues need time to stabilize. A set of retainers provides gentle, consistent support so your teeth don’t drift back to their starting positions.

Retainers can be removable (like clear retainers) or fixed (a bonded wire placed behind the teeth). Your orthodontist will recommend the best type based on your bite, your habits, and how you want it to feel day-to-day.

In-House Clear Retainers

Clear retainers fit over your teeth like a thin, smooth guard. Similarly to clear aligners, they’re discreet, comfortable, and easy to wear. Since they’re made through our in-house lab, clear retainers can be produced the same day as you finish treatment. Our same-day lab is also helpful if you lose or break a retainer, or if you need an update to your retainer’s fit.

Bonded Permanent Retainers

A bonded retainer is a thin wire secured behind the teeth to hold your teeth in place around the clock. It’s a great option if you prefer “set it and forget it” retention. Keep in mind that you’ll have to carefully clean your teeth around a bonded retainer wire, especially around the ends, to ensure good oral hygiene long-term.

How Long Will I Need to Wear My Retainer?

Retainers are a long-term commitment for most orthodontic patients. However, a straighter, healthier smile is well worth the commitment! Many patients wear their retainers full-time at first, then transition to wearing them only at night. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends night time retainer wear for a lifetime.

Caring for Your Retainer

Proper retainer care helps it last longer and prevents the need for frequent replacements.

Some helpful tips for removable retainer care include:

• Clean your retainer daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush and mild antibacterial soap
• Avoid soaking your retainer in hot water, as this can warp the material
• Store your retainers in their case when you’re not wearing them
• Keep your retainers away from pets and young children
• Bring your retainers to future checkups to ensure a good fit

Caring for bonded retainers is a little different:

• Brush carefully around your bonded retainers
• Use interdental picks or floss to get around the wire and clean hard-to-reach areas
• Be careful when enjoying hard, chewy, or sticky candies or foods
