Invisalign Before and After

Invisalign is a great way to discreetly straighten your teeth while also being able to eat, drink, and brush as you normally would. If your dentist believes that you would be a good candidate for Invisalign, it is a great choice that has amazing results for those with the discipline to get them from beginning to end. Here’s a look at what you can expect before and after treatment.

Dr. McSurdy’s office, also known as “The Smile Specialists” of Pennsylvania, are dedicated to providing you with the best orthodontic care around. Our team of experienced professionals are ready to help you and your family get the smile you’ve always wanted.

What Makes a Good Candidate?

Before you can begin treatment with Invisalign, it is important to determine whether or not it will benefit your individual needs substantially. Unfortunately, not everybody will get the same results from Invisalign and some will need to consider braces as an option instead. The best person to determine your eligibility for Invisalign is your dentist or orthodontist, but there are a few common things to consider.

A good fit for Invisalign has common problems with their teeth that do not require unique hardware or special movements that only braces can accomplish. Age is also a factor in determining your eligibility. Younger teens and children are typically better off with braces because of how much their teeth shift on a day to day basis.

The most important factor that you should consider is whether or not you will wear your aligners at least the minimum amount of time per day. Trays are made of plastic, and should be worn at least 20-22 hours per day, only removing them to eat, drink, and brush.

How it Works

Invisalign uses a series of BPA free plastic aligner trays that patients exchange every week or two to slowly and gently move teeth closer to perfection. This could take anywhere from one to one and a half years or more depending on your needs. Over the course of treatment, you will notice your teeth getting straighter as it progresses. You will visit your orthodontist regularly to check up on your progress and make sure you are properly taking care of your mouth and your aligners.

After Treatment

Once you complete your Invisalign treatment, as determined by your orthodontist, you will be given a retainer. Just like with metal braces, a retainer helps to keep your teeth in position. You should wear the retainers directed by your orthodontist, but you can expect to be wearing it every night to make sure that your teeth do not drift out of place. A retainer can be considered the most important step of getting Invisalign treatment because without it, it is likely that the year or more of dedication required to successfully complete treatment will be a waste.
