Braces and Invisalign: School Activities

Being a teenager is difficult enough without limiting their ability to do what activities they love. Dr. McSurdy is dedicated to making braces or Invisalign as easy and straightforward as possible. We employ innovative products and the latest technology to ensure our patients have the best experience possible without a drastic change of lifestyle.

Let’s talk about some of the activities students in our area participate in, and ways they can work those activities into their lives while on an orthodontic treatment plan.

How Do School Activities Impact Braces or Invisalign?

Between volleyball and marching band at Boyertown Area Senior High and Middle Schools, basketball and field hockey at Perkiomen Valley High School College and soccer at Methacton High School, orthodontic care can be a challenge for athletes and musicians alike.

Traditional braces utilize metal brackets and wires to systematically straighten teeth. When playing basketball, field hockey, soccer or volleyball our doctors suggest a mouth guard to protect your braces and mouth when playing contact sports. Playing a wind instrument can be difficult, however, it isn’t impossible. Our experienced Orthodontists will go over all the options and ways to make playing these instruments more comfortable.

Invisalign or Invisalign Teen is by far the easiest form of orthodontic care for teenagers that engage in ANY of the above activities. Invisalign Teen aligners are removable, doing away with the need for mouth guards or specialized equipment to be involved in extracurricular school activities.
