Jaw Surgery? Say no, no, no!

Jason before blank

One of our strengths is presenting alternative options to jaw surgery and still obtaining excellent results. Often, malalignment of one or both dental options is a barrier to patients with a bad bite. Creating two symmetrical dental arches (with straight teeth) can create the ability for patients to “find” the correct bite. We measure the teeth and dental arches in order to create balance within the jaws. The result is a balanced occlusion where by a gentle fit is achieved. Recently, several patients have come to us for non-surgical treatment to meet their orthodontic needs after many years of avoidance. Hearing a surgical approach earlier stymied their plans. Check out the results! Jason B. was told twice that he needed surgery!

Parents — Super Important X-Ray for Kids

Around ages eight – ten, the third molars (wisdom teeth) begin to form. At this age, all children should have a panorex to ensure that these teeth are developing normally. On occasion cysts or tumors can begin to develop at this age range, on or near the third molars. These abnormal growths can be very aggressive and destructive to the jaw bone and adjacent teeth. They should be removed as early as possible. While the vast majorities are benign, they can expand in months to years to very large sizes which makes removal difficult for the oral surgeon. When the surgeon is removing them, the surgeon must be careful to not fracture the jaw. Parents, if your dentist does not have an x-ray machine that encircles the head (also know as a panorex machine), please visit the orthodontist to have this important x-ray.

Faster, Gentler Orthodontics

Technology has advanced quality of life in so many ways. It is also true that orthodontics has benefitted greatly from these advancements. My  previous blog on Acceledent explains how micropulses delivered to the teeth for twenty minutes per day can make orthodontic treatment more comfortable and more time efficient. Additionally, Invisalign cases have the advantage of calibrated tooth movement. Many Invisalign treatments can be reduced in treatment length by 50% or more. Thus a traditional two year case can often be finished in one year or less! Patients who prefer braces can expect a more comfortable experience and a 20% to 50% reduction in treatment time. Please ask us to learn more about how new technologies can benefit you.
