Skin Protection

Spring has arrived at last! So outside we go to watch our kids on the athletic fields. Please remember to apply sunscreen to your exposed skin to prevent skin damage. SPF 30 and above is the best to reduce the risk of future skin cancers. Remember that skin damage due to sun exposure is cumulative so it is especially important to apply sunscreen to your children. It is probably wise to choose a sunscreen that stays on well with perspiration and swimming. I prefer sunscreen that contains zinc oxide. For example, Neutrogena Sensitive Skin, which can be purchased at any local Target for under ten dollars. Pools will be opening soon so let’s get ready and purchase the sunscreen now! No More Messy Impressions That Make You Gag!

In our quest to always be at the forefront of modern orthodontics, we will soon have a new technology in our office that will allow us to take a series of photos of your teeth using a specialized intraoral camera.  The system is called “iTero” and it will be used specifically to take needed impressions for Invisalign patients without all the gagging and goop!  Images of your teeth and gums will be immediately uploaded to a computer that will allow us to send this information directly to Invisalign.  The benefits for you, the patient are amazing!  No more goop in your mouth, and no more gagging when getting your “impressions” or “molds” for Invisalign.  Also, because the images are uploaded immediately, processing time is decreased, so you will be able to get started with your aligners more quickly!  In fact, the intraoral camera is so accurate that when you finally…

Crock Pot Special

With today’s busy lifestyle, it is hard to keep up with your schedule AND cook a delicious meal. Recently, my wife has used the crock pot to make some fantastic meals. She cooks ribs for about three hours on high in the crock pot and it tenderizes them perfectly. Then remove them from the crock pot and place them in a preheated oven ( 350 degrees). Make sure to add your favorite BBQ sauces and baste them as you normally would. They only need to cook for about two minutes per side. Once the weather clears up, you could always finish them on the grill. They are the most delicious ribs ever! My 17 year old son has proclaimed these ribs to be his favorite meal. Another favorite in our house in London broil. Again, place it in the crock pot for three hours on high and it turns out…

Spring Sports Season

With spring’s warm weather it’s time for that trip to the sporting goods store. Baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and softball are all sports that can involve hard contact to the face. So if you have braces, please ask us for an orthodontic mouth guard (no charge). If you do not have braces, invest in a sports mouth guard from Nike or Shock Doctor. It may help to avoid dental injuries such as a fracture or tooth avulsion.  I also recommend that your league purchase a few Save-A-Tooth kits incase a tooth is accidentally knocked out. Want more information about the Save-A-Tooth kits, refer to my past blog. Now if there is no Save-A-Tooth kit available, the best thing to do with a knocked out tooth is to put it right back in. Do not rinse the tooth before placing it back into the socket. The body will accept the tooth better…

Our Favorite Things

Every year at our annual office Christmas party we like to plan a gift exchange.  This year we decided to do a “Favorite Things” Polyanna.  Everyone was asked to bring three of their favorite things as gifts.  Each gift had to be exactly the same and under $5.   At the party, once everyone arrived, we wrote our name on three slips of paper and dropped them into a bag.  We each then drew three names out of the bag – making sure each name we chose was different and not our own.  The first person kicked it off by standing up and sharing what her gift was and why it was her favorite thing.  She then delivered her gifts to each of the three girls whose name she drew from the bag.   Then the next person stood up, shared her favorite things, and delivered her gifts.  And so on and…
